I received the June 2016 Boxycharm subscription box this past week, and I thought I’d give you a quick rundown on what was in the box and my thoughts on it.
The theme this month is “Girls Just Wanna Have Sun,” so I was hoping for some items to complete my summer makeup collection!
The five items in my June 2016 Boxycharm box were the following:
- 3 Farmacy hydrating gel masks ($24)
- LVX Nail Lacquer in various colors ($18)
- Cougar Face & Body Shimmer in Diamond Kiss ($28)
- OFRA Oil Control Pressed Powder ($40)
- Girlactik eyeliner marker ($20)
That gave the June 2016 Boxycharm a value of $130, totally worth the $21/month price tag. Let’s break down the box by item.
Farmacy Masks
Farmacy describes these masks as having a “brightening” effect. I am not a huge mask user, and I haven’t actually used any of the masks they have given out in previous boxes. This is a pretty blah item to me, especially because skincare is so individual to a person that I’m sure that this mask can’t please all skin types. I prefer not to risk putting something new on my face in case of irritation or breakouts. Would I buy this again? NO.
LVX Nail Lacquer
This is a bit of a repeat item from the March 2015 Boxycharm. I still have my mint green one from that box, but it seems to have developed some sort of mold or discoloring, which has put me off from using it. This is a pretty color and very in trend currently on Pinterest. Right now I have acrylics, so I might use this in between appointments sometime but my experience with the last one of these plus this being a repeat is a bit discouraging. Would I buy this again? NO.
Cougar Face & Body Shimmer
The third item in this month’s box is body shimmer from what looks like a UK brand, Cougar. I’ve included swatches of it at the end of the post! It is a highly pigmented gold shimmer that applies quite smoothly. I don’t really see body or face shimmer being a practical product for everyday looks, but I will probably bring it out to go with my fringe look for the upcoming music festival season. Other than that, I might try using it as a sparkly eyeshadow. Would I buy this again? NO.
OFRA Oil Control Powder
This pressed powder definitely fits the theme as a summer essential for my oily friends. Again, skin is very personal, and I can see many Boxycharm subscribers not needing this product. I especially have dry skin, so I’d only be pulling this out on very hot summer days. I included a swatch at the end of this post, which shows that the powder is actually pretty pigmented which worries me if pictures are taken with flash. I’d be very sparing in how much I applied to avoid having a face paler than the rest of your body! Would I buy this again? NO.
Girlactik Eyeliner Marker
The last item in the June 2016 Boxycharm was the Girlactik eyeliner marker. The style is very similar to my favorite eyeliner, Kat Von D Tattoo Liner. My Kat Von D liner lasts all day with minimal fading and flaking, so I want to see to see how this one compares. In my swatch test below, the Girlactik liner definitely had some staying power but was not very water-resistant. I really like the feel and control of pen-style eyeliners, though, so this could be a great addition to some subscribers’ collection! Would I buy this again? Maybe.
SWATCHES
Here are the swatches I made of the body shimmer, pressed powder, and eyeliner. The first picture shows normal swatches with no primer or base. In the second and third, I tested the staying power of the Girlactik eyeliner. In the second photo, I rubbed the eyeliner vigorously. In the third photo, I rubbed the eyeliner with water.
Overall Thoughts
Overall, I would only repurchase maybe one item from this box, which means this month was kind of a miss for me. I didn’t appreciate the repeat item from past boxes and the skincare items specific to skin type. Boxycharm has also been sending out a lot of eyeliner products (almost one every month), though this is one of the first pen-style ones. I would love to see more variety in makeup products in the future or universal skincare products!
